Ok, a little about Brunei fyi…
The people and culture are generally friendly… Being a Muslim state (and there are also many Chinese, Indians and Caucasians there, not unlike Malaysia), so, you can expect none or very little “entertainment” or night life… the favorite past-time there are satellite TV, VCD/DVDs, trekking at the national parks (read HILLS), shopping (local malls), chilling out at coffee joints (starbucks wanna-be’s) and eating (food is real cheap). Otherwise, nothing much to see or do.
Public transport system is poor, you need to rent a car to get around. One consolation here, petrol is as cheap as (if not cheaper than) bottled water…
IMO, if u need one word to describe the place… it got to be Relax… (read “Boring”). No harm visiting if you really really need to stop-over, otherwise i’ll give this hilly country a miss if I were you.
As for your eco-tourism part, i’ll take the East Malaysian states of Sarawak (Mulu Caves) or Sabah (Kinabalu National Park) any time, which are on the same island of Borneo as Brunei.
